We had a nice talk together before our exhibition this is what Joakim had to say.
You say about your paintings that they are not so provocative and contradictory. So what does your installation art @ wittulsky gallery mean to you?
About my paintings I don’t try to necessarily provoke, but they can still consist of contradictions in the meaning of chosen subjects, colours, titles etc I think if a painting is just good or skillfully done you take the risk that it will be not so interesting.
Earlier I wanted to make more of a statement with my art and installations have to be more political or theoretical to get the message through. The work ”Good morning” was made in 2008 at a time when I was interested in making a statement or to provoke, involving also the choice of material and techniques.
In the past few years you have been concentrated on painting. How did you like the process of doing installations for us again?
I have always been painting even when I did installations and sculptures, so painting has always been there and in some kind of dialogue with the installation works. When I was asked by you to show ”Good morning” again I felt that the time was right, maybe even more right now than when it was made. The work is a painted nuclear explosion with an outline in pink neon. Originally it was made as a sort of graffiti tag sprayed directly on the wall, but a exclusive tag with glitter and neon. I also made a version of the explosion in a coffee cup, and it was like -Good morning welcome to reality! This reality is now even more our reality so it make sense to show it again.
In one interview, you say there is no average. What is your conception on values?
I think that had to be a question about how I see art in general and if art is just average provoking, average made or just average it is not very good or interesting.
It has to touch you in some way. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that art with provoking subjects is the most provocative, it can be other things and also it is in the viewer’s eye. For me I don’t try to be provocative at all anymore, just make as good art as I can and be true to myself.
Light is very important to you. This is a reason you started working with neon, because the colors are strong. How do you feel working in a church where you build a dialogue with the surrounding?
I decided to ad a mirroring effect to the installation consisting of a watersurface in front of the bomb, which also will be mirroring the church room to make a connection between the art work and the space around it. It will also be an interesting comment concerning evolution and religion and hopefully it will be a beautiful Bang-experience.
